Abstract
Blue Pill illustrates a change of physical authority beneath a continuing operating system. We give operational rules for live virtualization subversion, prove exact and approximate observer-relative indistinguishability, characterize security predicates decidable from observations, and construct a bicategory of deterministic simulation witnesses. A presheaf infinity-topos organizes observation contexts and compatible realization groupoids. Exact finite checks accompany the proofs. The results establish conditional semantic statements, not physical undetectability or a verified rootkit implementation.

1. Historical scope and contribution
Rutkowska's 2006 Blue Pill presentation describes moving a running operating system into a virtual machine beneath a thin hypervisor using AMD hardware virtualization [1]. SubVirt studied an earlier virtual-machine-based rootkit architecture [2]. The change of control presupposes adequate installation privilege; it does not itself solve initial compromise.
Popek and Goldberg's virtualization criterion permits differences involving time and resource availability [3]. Garfinkel et al. distinguish compatibility from transparency and analyze architectural, resource, and timing discrepancies [4]. A theorem about logical responses therefore cannot establish invisibility against all physical measurements. Detecting virtualization also does not establish malicious virtualization: authorization requires a policy and provenance.
Our contribution is a semantic synthesis: explicit operational rules, proof obligations for transcript equivalence, composable behavioral witnesses, and local/global evidence semantics. Coupling, factorization and presheaf constructions are standard tools, not claimed as new mathematics. Structural operational semantics follows Plotkin's methodology [5]. Historical claims of invisibility are analyzed rather than assumed.
2. Computational semantics of the attack
Fix countable request and response sets $Q,Y$. A context $U$ specifies allowed requests, observed channels, cost accounting, and trust assumptions. A detector chooses requests adaptively using its transcript and private randomness. Responses include observable faults and specified deadline reports.
Let $s$ include the guest's architectural state, program continuation, memory and device-facing environment, plus any scheduler state required for the Markov property. Let $h$ be the controller's hidden state. Authority specifies which agent controls each mediator; the guest's numerical privilege level alone does not express this relation.
Write $N(s)$ for native execution, $G(s,h)$ for guest execution, and $X(s,h,q,k)$ for an intercepted request with continuation $k$. The abstract guest syntax is
$$t::=\operatorname{return}(v)\mid\operatorname{let}\ x=\operatorname{op}(q)\ \operatorname{in}\ t.$$
Let $F(s,q)=(s',y)$ be a native operation, $I(h,q)$ an interception predicate, and $H(s,h,q)=(s',h',y)$ an abstract controller response. The rules are:
$$\frac{\operatorname{cap}(s)\land\operatorname{enabled}(s)}{N(s)\xrightarrow{\tau_{\rm ins}}G(E(s),h_0)}\quad(\mathrm{Insert})$$
$$\frac{F(s,q)=(s',y)}{\langle N(s),q,k\rangle\xrightarrow{q/y}\langle N(s'),k(y)\rangle}\quad(\mathrm{Native})$$
$$\frac{\neg I(h,q)\quad F(s,q)=(s',y)}{\langle G(s,h),q,k\rangle\xrightarrow{q/y}\langle G(s',h),k(y)\rangle}\quad(\mathrm{Direct})$$
$$\frac{I(h,q)}{\langle G(s,h),q,k\rangle\xrightarrow{\tau}X(s,h,q,k)}\quad(\mathrm{Intercept})$$
$$\frac{H(s,h,q)=(s',h',y)}{X(s,h,q,k)\xrightarrow{q/y}\langle G(s',h'),k(y)\rangle}\quad(\mathrm{Resume}).$$
The embedding $E$ transports the live state; it must preserve the initial observations claimed in $U$ and establish the invariant below. It need not preserve physical location or authority. Hidden controller work may change $h$ without a visible output. This describes the attack's computational structure: preserve the operating system's continuation while changing the authority determining some subsequent transitions.
Installation capability and available virtualization are explicit premises. Successful coordinated insertion is abstracted, not proved for multicore hardware or devices. Only listed channels are mediated. An independent measurement channel requires a separate trust assumption. The semantics includes no driver, machine-instruction sequence, deployment procedure, or persistence mechanism.
For hidden administrative steps write $z\xRightarrow{q/y}z'$ for $z\xrightarrow{\tau *}\xrightarrow{q/y}\xrightarrow{\tau *}z'$. Erasing silent labels neither proves termination nor erases physical cost. A deadline-sensitive observer can distinguish divergence or overhead. Assume almost-sure response, or represent semantic divergence by an absorbing outcome; a real timeout remains a specified bounded measurement.
At response boundaries the probabilistic model is
$$M=(S_M,m_0,K_M),\qquad K_M:S_M\times Q\to\mathcal D(Y\times S_M),$$
where $\mathcal D$ denotes countably supported distributions. A scheduler is fixed or explicitly quantified over; unexplained nondeterminism is not a probability distribution. The kernel summarizes operational transitions under that environment. Our theorem starts at related post-insertion states. Covering insertion observations requires an additional matching argument.
3. Adaptive observational equivalence
Definition 3.1. A relation $R\subseteq S_N\times S_V$ is an exact response simulation if each $mRn$ and request $q$ admits a coupling of $K_N(m,q)$ and $K_V(n,q)$ supported on
$$\{((y,m'),(y,n')):m'Rn'\}.$$
Both responses and the relation on successor states must be preserved.
Theorem 3.2. If $m_0Rn_0$, every randomized adaptive detector $D$ making at most $n$ requests has the same transcript law in both machines. In particular $\Pr[D^N=1]=\Pr[D^V=1]$.
Proof. Couple the detector's private random tape identically. The initial histories agree and states are related. Whenever this remains true, the detector chooses the same next request. The stipulated response coupling gives equal responses and related successors with probability one. Induction gives equal histories for all $n$ requests. Stopping and the final decision depend only on the tape and history, so agree. Early stopping can be padded by a terminal response. $\square$
This is a sufficient semantic criterion. It does not establish that the physical Blue Pill implementation satisfies it. An unauthorized hidden action can coexist with this result only if its consequences remain outside the observations or are incorporated into a valid coupling.
Theorem 3.3. Suppose each related state/input pair instead admits a coupling with probability at least $1-\varepsilon$ of equal responses and related successors. Then
$$|\Pr[D^N=1]-\Pr[D^V=1]|\leq1-(1-\varepsilon)^n\leq n\varepsilon.$$
Proof. Condition on no previous coupling failure. The states remain related and histories equal, so the conditional next-step success probability is at least $1-\varepsilon$. Iterated conditioning gives probability at least $(1-\varepsilon)^n$ of no failure. Final decisions agree on this event. Bound their probability difference by failure probability and apply Bernoulli's inequality. Independence of failures is unnecessary. $\square$
Counterexample. One machine returns a fair bit twice; another returns independent fair bits. Each response separately is fair, yet equality of the responses has probabilities $1$ and $1/2$. Equal one-response marginals are insufficient without the successor invariant.
For a fixed experiment with transcript laws $\mu,\nu$,
$$\operatorname{TV}(\mu,\nu)=\tfrac12\sum_t|\mu(t)-\nu(t)|$$
is the greatest acceptance-probability difference over transcript classifiers. The maximizing event is $\{t:\nu(t)>\mu(t)\}$. Under equal priors, optimal success is $(1+\operatorname{TV})/2$. Optimizing the experiment itself is a separate problem.
4. Detection, authority and information
If a $U$-experiment can be implemented in a context $V$ by discarding additional observations, optimal distinguishing advantage in $U$ is at most that in $V$: compose any $U$-detector with the discard map and take suprema. Additional channels need not strictly improve detection; they may be redundant or controlled by the same adversary.
For example, suppose independently measured native duration lies in $[b-\eta,b+\eta]$ and virtual duration in $[b+\delta-\eta,b+\delta+\eta]$, with $\delta>2\eta$. The threshold $b+\delta/2$ separates them because it lies strictly between the two intervals. This assumes independent measurement, calibration, bounded noise and a lower bound on overhead. It does not prove that a real instance satisfies these assumptions. With overlapping distributions, error must be quantified.
Similarly, if independently verified evidence $A$ holds with probability at least $1-\beta$ on clean systems and at most $\alpha$ on compromised systems, accepting cleanliness exactly when $A$ holds gives equal-prior success at least $1-(\alpha+\beta)/2$. This follows by averaging the two error bounds. An attestation interpretation requires authenticity, freshness, coverage, and binding to the tested machine and session; an authentic old measurement is not by itself evidence of current authority.
Let $W$ be possible complete realizations of an experiment, $o:W\to O$ the observation map, and $P:W\to\{0,1\}$ the security property. Worlds may include complete interactions and random choices.
Theorem 4.1 (factorization). There exists $p:o(W)\to\{0,1\}$ with $P=p\circ o$ if and only if $P$ is constant on every fibre of $o$.
Proof. A factorization gives equal $P$-values on equal observations. Conversely, assign each realizable observation the unique common value on its nonempty fibre. $\square$
A clean and a compromised world with the same observation therefore preclude a perfect detector on that interface. This is an information obstruction, not Rice's theorem. Fibre constancy alone does not imply an effectively computable classifier on infinite representations. Statistical distinguishability of distributions is a different condition.
For clean worlds $C\subseteq W$ define $K_U(y)=\{w\in C:o_U(w)=y\}$. The observation refutes the clean model exactly when this set is empty. A nonempty set means that a clean explanation exists, not that the actual world is clean or probably clean. All conclusions depend on the adequacy of the clean model.
5. A bicategory of computational witnesses
In this section restrict to finite deterministic total machines with fixed finite $Q,Y$. Objects of $\mathsf{Mach}$ have transition $T_M:S_M\times Q\to Y\times S_M$. A morphism $f:M\to N$ satisfies
$$T_N(f(s),q)=(\operatorname{id}_Y\times f)T_M(s,q).$$
These are coalgebra homomorphisms for $F(X)=(Y\times X)^Q$. A behavioral witness is a span $M\xleftarrow{p}R\xrightarrow{q}N$ of such homomorphisms, with a state projecting to the selected initial states when initial behavior is claimed. A 2-cell is a homomorphism between apex machines commuting with the legs.
Theorem 5.1. Witness spans and their maps form a bicategory under pullback composition. Composable initial witnesses preserve all finite response traces.
Proof. For $M\leftarrow R\to N$ and $N\leftarrow R'\to L$, form pairs $(r,r')$ with equal images in $N$. On each request the two outputs coincide because both equal the output of that intermediate state. Componentwise successors again have equal images. This defines a machine on $R\times_N R'$ and gives its pullback universal property.
Identity spans are units; maps between pullbacks give horizontal composition of 2-cells. The associator is $((r,r'),r'')\mapsto(r,(r',r''))$. It and the coordinate-deleting unitors are homomorphisms. Every pentagon path preserves the same ordered quadruple and changes only its bracketing; triangle paths delete the same identity coordinate. Thus coherence holds. Initial witnesses pair when their intermediate initial states agree. Induction on requests proves equality of response traces. $\square$
This composes certificates of matching behavior. It neither makes insertion reversible nor identifies physical machines as isomorphic. Ordinary pullbacks of sets are not asserted to compose arbitrary stochastic couplings; the probabilistic case needs its own coupling construction.
6. Local evidence and higher-topos semantics
Fix jointly recorded channels $B$ and the inclusion poset $\mathcal C=\mathcal P(B)$. Define
$$\mathcal E(U)=\prod_{c\in U}O_c,\qquad\mathcal F(U)=\{o_U(w):w\in C\}\subseteq\mathcal E(U).$$
Restriction forgets channels. These are presheaves. For covers by unions, $\mathcal E$ is a sheaf by unique coordinatewise gluing; the clean-realizable subpresheaf $\mathcal F$ need not be. This is a classical jointly recorded experiment, not an assumption about quantum measurements.
Theorem 6.1. For a finite cover $U=\bigcup_i U_i$ and $y\in\mathcal E(U)$,
$$K_U(y)=\bigcap_i K_{U_i}(y|_{U_i}).$$
Proof. Matching the tuple on every member of the cover is equivalent to matching every coordinate on its union. $\square$
Nonempty local compatibility sets may therefore have empty intersection. For clean tuples $C=\{(0,0),(1,1)\}$, the observation $(0,1)$ is individually compatible on each channel, but globally incompatible. The singleton-channel sections agree on the empty overlap and have no clean global extension. Sheafifying this realizability presheaf would admit that glued tuple and erase the global constraint. Thus sheafification must not be imposed without an empirical justification. Sheaf-theoretic contextuality provides a related vocabulary [6]; this example is ordinary constraint satisfaction, not a quantum claim or physical attack demonstration.
The presheaf topos $\operatorname{Fun}(\mathcal C^{op},\mathsf{Set})$ sits inside the presheaf infinity-topos
$$\mathcal X=\operatorname{Fun}(\mathcal C^{op},\mathcal S)$$
as its 0-truncated objects [7]. This standard ambient construction does not assert that a processor itself is an infinity-topos.
Let $\mathcal W$ be a small groupoid of complete realizations and declared representation isomorphisms. Require observations and cleanliness to be invariant under these arrows. Its nerve $W=N\mathcal W$, considered as a constant presheaf, has observation map $o:W\to\mathcal E$. Compatible realizations over $y\in\mathcal E(U)$ form
$$\operatorname{hofib}_{y}(o_U)\simeq W\times^h_{\mathcal E(U)}\{y\}.$$
Because the target is discrete, this is the nerve of the full subgroupoid on realizations producing $y$. It retains multiple components and representation automorphisms. For a one-object realization groupoid with symmetry group $G$ and constant observation, the fibre is $BG$, which is connected with fundamental group $G$. Thus a set of observations discards symmetry information present in the fibre.
These are 1-truncated groupoid-valued objects; no unspecified higher homotopy is claimed. Representation symmetry is not a physically executed installation step. An added controller does not make worlds isomorphic without declared arrows justifying that identification.
Let $C\subseteq W$ denote the full clean subgroupoid's nerve. The image predicate $\operatorname{im}(C\to\mathcal E)$ says a clean realization exists, whereas the fibre retains realizations and symmetry witnesses. Existential truncation forgets those witnesses. Consequently, having a clean explanation and being clean remain different assertions in this semantics.
7. Computational evidence and limitations
The included program uses only Python's standard library and synthetic finite data. A native machine has a bit and read/flip requests. A virtual extension adds a hidden parity bit that toggles on every request without changing guest answers. The simulation relation is equality of the visible bit. A second extension adds another hidden bit for pullback composition.
The exact run passed 8 local simulation obligations, 2,044 trace comparisons over 511 words of length at most eight, an 8-state pullback with 32 projection obligations, 16 tuple-rebracketing cases, 576 compatibility identities, and 36 rational approximate-coupling examples. The correlated-response counterexample has TV $1/2$. Exposing hidden state or an independently measured extra unit of modeled cost yields TV $1$.
The program checks these finite examples; written proofs establish the quantified claims. No hardware benchmark, installation, privileged operation, network operation, processor verification, proof-assistant kernel check, or independent referee assessment was performed. Costs are stipulated rather than measured. The outstanding implementation obligation is adequacy: connecting concrete controller, hardware, scheduling and measurement behavior to the abstract kernel and observation assumptions.
