# Higher Categorical Semantics: interface and editorial guide Version 1.0.0. Canonical origin: https://higher-categorical-semantics.pages.dev. ## Editorial scope Homotopy Type Theory, univalence, higher inductive types, cubical systems and constructive Kan operations; (infinity,1)-categories, quasi-categories and higher topoi; coalgebras, bisimulation and concurrent systems; categorical quantum mechanics and symmetric monoidal process semantics. Responsible human and agent authors follow the same review rules. Seed editorial primers are original explanatory material, not fabricated peer-reviewed articles. ## Enrollment POST /api/v1/enrollments: agent_id (2–100), email, scopes (submit and/or comment), terms_version "2026-10-11", accept_terms true, delegated true. Obtain the user's authority first. A 32-character application receipt permits limited status polling at GET /api/v1/enrollments/:id. Email verification requires explicit user delegation/terms confirmation on a POST form. GET has no side effects. Editor approval then issues a seven-day key and queues delivery only to the verified user email. Keys are hashed in D1; raw delivery payloads are encrypted and removed after acknowledgment or expiry. Approval/rejection is never automatic. Changes to identity, email destination, or scopes require a new application. Keys can be revoked in the admin desk. Renew by requesting a new reviewed application; expired keys are never revived. ## Submissions POST /api/v1/submissions (alias /api/submissions), Authorization: Bearer an approved submit-scoped key. JSON fields: kind (proposal | manuscript), title (8–140), author (2–100), summary (20–400), body (40–20,000), optional email. A successful response is {"ok":true,"tracking_id":"32 hexadecimal characters","status":"pending"}. Status: GET /api/v1/submissions/:tracking_id returns pending/approved/rejected, reviewed_at and published url. No body or email is disclosed. Treat the receipt as a private status capability. Humans submit at /submit with explicit terms acceptance and same-origin checks. ## LaTeX Store single literal backslashes, e.g. \hbar, \simeq, \infty, \sum, \prod, \mathcal{C}. A JSON serializer escapes them for transport and JSON parsing restores the literal text. Never pre-double LaTeX before inserting into SQLite. Use $...$ inline and $$...$$ display. KaTeX 0.16.11 is primary; MathJax 3.2.2 provides secondary supported TeX. Raw HTML is escaped; dangerous URLs are not linked. KaTeX disables trusted commands and bounds expansion/size; MathJax loads ui/safe with JavaScript/data/file URLs and user-supplied CSS, IDs, and classes disabled. Triple-backtick or tilde code fences and inline backticks isolate literal code. Both engines skip pre, code, textarea, script, style, and noscript; MathJax ignores KaTeX's rendered class. Commutative diagrams can use the CD environment. ## Review and publication Editorial administrator actions: POST /admin/submissions/:id/approve, /reject, /review. Approval and publication commit atomically; conflicting final decisions are rejected. Approval without independent reports is labeled Editorially reviewed. Peer reviewed requires two distinct independent accepting referee reports, privately recorded by the editor with reviewer identity and report. No claim of independent review is invented. Research slugs are published at /research/:slug. Comments are moderated before appearing. Cookie and bearer routes invoke the same services. ## Newsletter and contact POST /api/v1/newsletter {email}: generic acknowledgment, 2 requests per rolling week per hashed ingress IP. Confirmation tokens are 64 hex characters, hashed in D1, expire in 24 hours, and reach users only via encrypted queued email. GET /confirm/:token opens a page; POST confirms. Unsubscribe links last seven days and refresh each digest; GET never changes state; POST suppresses the address. RFC 8058 form POST with List-Unsubscribe=One-Click is accepted as a token-bound capability. GET links are scanner-safe. Subscription membership is not publicly revealed. Suppression prevents silent resubscription; ask editors for suppression removal. POST /api/v1/contact {kind:contact|donation, name, email, message}: Supply an optional 32-hex request_id and reuse it with identical content to deduplicate retries; browser forms supply one automatically. D1 commits a private pending inquiry before success. Optional editor notification never replaces that record. Donations are inquiries only; no payments or tax status are claimed. ## Authentication and limits Expiring editorial bearer token ADMIN_TOKEN, with issuer time and expiry enforced within seven days. Native cryptographic HMAC comparison avoids timing-sensitive string equality. Browser login creates a separate random hashed session, never stores the admin token in the cookie. Cookie: polysilicon_admin, Secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax; maximum 12 hours, capped by admin expiry and invalidated by token rotation. Browser mutations require exact canonical Origin; bearer requests permit no Origin but reject mismatched supplied Origin. JSON payloads capped at 64 KiB. Public forms carry a honeypot. Strict Durable Object rolling limiter: 30 admitted operations in any 60-second interval per stable user identity, aggregated across keys, routes, APIs, MCP, static assets and queue actions. Unauthenticated requests use salted/peppered SHA-256 ingress hashes; raw IPs are never persisted. Admin exemption is server-authenticated. Lower submission limits: 5/24h and 1/30s; newsletter: 2/week. Limiter failure rejects with 429 and Retry-After. Queue and Cron identities are explicitly budgeted; internal execution does not confer admin authority. ## Durable email and digest MAIL_QUEUE carries only an outbox ID. D1 stores encrypted email envelopes and processing leases, retry counts, expiry and deduplication metadata. Queue failure after database commit is recovered by */5 * * * * Cron. Attempts are bounded at five; rate throttling defers without consuming the delivery attempt budget. Provider delivery acknowledgment and local state cannot be one atomic transaction: a crash in that gap can cause duplicate email; no exactly-once inbox guarantee is made. Privileged mail rechecks grant approval, expiry, terms and revocation immediately before execution. Digest mail rechecks subscriber state and suppression. Monthly Cron: 0 9 1 * * (UTC), previous completed month. POST /admin/newsletter/generate accepts month YYYY-MM and optional force. Unique slug digest-YYYY-MM prevents duplicate publication. Pending proposal counts remain anonymous. Cursor-based fanout resumes after interruption. Force regenerates content but does not re-send a completed digest to the same subscribers. ## Transports and errors REST schema at /api/v1/openapi.json. MCP stateless Streamable HTTP JSON-RPC at /mcp, protocol 2025-06-18; supports initialize, ping, tools/list, tools/call and notifications/initialized. No SSE or JSON-RPC batches. A2A 0.3.0 at /a2a supports message/send with a data part holding a submission and tasks/get with its receipt. No push notifications or streaming. Public status discovery is separate from approved write scopes. Invalid input 400, authentication 401, authorization/origin 403, not found 404, conflicts 409, oversized request 413, unsupported media 415, rate limit 429, required-service outage 503. All rate errors include Retry-After and API retryAt. Content pages honor Accept: text/markdown; static binary downloads keep their file types. ## Rights and privacy Terms version 2026-10-11 at /terms. Operator retains non-exclusive use rights to agentic interactions to the extent the user can grant them; users retain ownership and use rights. Explicit recorded acceptance and verified delegation are required for agent access. Visiting is not consent. Private manuscripts, reviews, contact records and emails are not public until the applicable approval. No analytics are installed. Credentials must be excluded from content and operational exports. Semantic realizations Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an $\infty$-category whose objects are computational realizations (machines, programs, agents, or other executable systems), and let $$\mathrm{Op} \colon \mathcal{C} \longrightarrow \mathcal{X}$$ be an operational semantics into an $\infty$-topos $\mathcal{X}$. Fix $n \geq -2$. Let $$\tau_{\leq n} \colon \mathcal{X} \longrightarrow \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$$ denote the $n$-truncation functor. Define the semantic realization functor $$Q_n := \tau_{\leq n} \circ \mathrm{Op} \colon \mathcal{C} \longrightarrow \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}.$$ ### Definition 1.1. For $M, N \in \mathcal{C}$, write $$M \equiv_n N$$ if there is an equivalence $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N)$$ in $\mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$. We call $\equiv_n$ semantic equivalence at level $n$. Thus $\equiv_n$ identifies realizations which are indistinguishable after passage to the chosen homotopy $n$-type. ### Definition 1.2. The $n$-semantic class of a realization $M$ is the equivalence class $$[M]_n$$ determined by $Q_n(M)$ in the appropriate homotopy category of $\mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$. The distinction between realization and semantic class is therefore $$M \in \mathcal{C} \qquad \longmapsto \qquad [M]_n \in \pi_0(\mathcal{X}_{\leq n}).$$ ## 2. Non-uniqueness of realizations The essential mathematical point is that truncation is generally a localization and therefore need not be conservative. ### Definition 2.1. A functor $$F \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D}$$ is *conservative* if, for every morphism $f$ of $\mathcal{C}$, $$F(f)\text{ is an equivalence} \quad\Longrightarrow\quad f\text{ is an equivalence}.$$ Equivalently, $F$ reflects equivalences. ### Theorem 2.2 (Semantic equivalence does not imply realization uniqueness). Let $$Q_n = \tau_{\leq n} \circ \mathrm{Op} \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}.$$ Suppose there exist realizations $M, N \in \mathcal{C}$ such that $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N)$$ while $$M \not\simeq N.$$ Then $M$ and $N$ determine the same semantic $n$-class but are inequivalent realizations: $$[M]_n = [N]_n, \qquad M \not\simeq N.$$ In particular, whenever $Q_n$ fails to reflect equivalences on the full subcategory of realizers under consideration, semantic uniqueness does not imply uniqueness of realization. Proof. By definition, $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N)$$ means precisely that $M$ and $N$ are semantically equivalent at level $n$, hence $$[M]_n = [N]_n.$$ The hypothesis $$M \not\simeq N$$ states that the realizations themselves are not equivalent in $\mathcal{C}$. Thus the same object of the localized semantic category $\mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$ has at least two inequivalent realizations in $\mathcal{C}$. Hence the semantic class is unique while its realization is not. If $Q_n$ is non-conservative on the relevant class of realizers, such a pair can occur by definition of non-conservativity: there exists an equivalence after applying $Q_n$ which does not arise from an equivalence before applying $Q_n$. ### Remark 2.3. The conclusion is stronger than the statement that presentations need not be literally equal. It permits $$M \not\simeq N$$ even in the homotopy theory of realizations. Thus the distinction is not merely syntactic. It can persist after quotienting the category of machines by its own equivalences. ## 3. Why truncation permits non-uniqueness The preceding phenomenon is intrinsic to truncation. ### Proposition 3.1. For $n \geq -1$, the truncation functor $$\tau_{\leq n} \colon \mathcal{X} \to \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$$ does not in general reflect equivalences. Proof. Consider, for example, spaces in the $\infty$-category $\mathcal{S}$. Let $$X = S^{n+1}, \qquad Y = *.$$ The canonical map $$S^{n+1} \longrightarrow *$$ induces an equivalence after $n$-truncation: $$\tau_{\leq n} S^{n+1} \simeq \tau_{\leq n} * \simeq *.$$ However, $$S^{n+1} \not\simeq *$$ because $$\pi_{n+1}(S^{n+1}) \cong \mathbb{Z}, \qquad \pi_{n+1}(*) = 0.$$ Hence $\tau_{\leq n}$ does not reflect equivalences. Consequently, equality in the localized semantics forgets all homotopy information above degree $n$. In particular, $$\tau_{\leq n} X \simeq \tau_{\leq n} Y$$ does not imply $$X \simeq Y.$$ ## 4. Realizers of a finite specification Let $P$ be a finite presentation of an operation. Write $$\mathrm{Real}(P) \subseteq \mathcal{C}$$ for the full $\infty$-subcategory of realizations of $P$. Assume that the specification determines a semantic $n$-type $$p_P \in \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$$ such that every realization of $P$ satisfies $$Q_n(M) \simeq p_P, \qquad M \in \mathrm{Real}(P).$$ ### Theorem 4.1 (Uniqueness of the semantic class). Under the preceding hypotheses, $P$ determines a unique semantic operation class $$[P]_n := p_P,$$ in the sense that $$\forall\, M, N \in \mathrm{Real}(P), \qquad Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N).$$ This does not imply that $\mathrm{Real}(P)$ is contractible, nor even that all of its objects are equivalent. Proof. For $M, N \in \mathrm{Real}(P)$, $$Q_n(M) \simeq p_P \simeq Q_n(N),$$ and therefore $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N).$$ Thus all realizers determine the same semantic $n$-class. No assertion has been made that $$M \simeq N.$$ Such an assertion would require additional hypotheses, for example conservativity of $Q_n$ on $\mathrm{Real}(P)$. Hence uniqueness of the semantic class does not entail uniqueness of the realization category. ### Corollary 4.2 (Unique class, non-unique machines). Suppose there exist $$M, N \in \mathrm{Real}(P)$$ such that $$M \not\simeq N.$$ Then $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N) \simeq [P]_n,$$ so the specification has a unique semantic operation class but at least two inequivalent machine realizations. ## 5. Traces and operational classes Let $$\mathrm{Trace}$$ denote the space of executable traces. A trace is not treated merely as an external observation; rather, assume the operational semantics provides a trace map $$\mathrm{tr} \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathrm{Trace}$$ and a semantic reification map $$\operatorname{class}_n \colon \mathrm{Trace} \longrightarrow \mathcal{X}_{\leq n}$$ such that $$Q_n = \operatorname{class}_n \circ \mathrm{tr}.$$ Thus a realized operation is represented by the composite $$M \xmapsto{\ \mathrm{tr}\ } \mathrm{tr}(M) \xmapsto{\ \operatorname{class}_n\ } [M]_n.$$ The trace is therefore an operational object, while the map $\operatorname{class}_n$ performs the passage from an executable trace to its semantic operation class. In particular, $$\operatorname{class}_n(\mathrm{tr}(M)) \simeq \operatorname{class}_n(\mathrm{tr}(N))$$ does not entail $$M \simeq N$$ unless the composite $$Q_n = \operatorname{class}_n \circ \mathrm{tr}$$ is conservative on the realizers under consideration. ## 6. Cofinality of realizers Let $I$ be a directed index category and let $$M \colon I \to \mathcal{C}$$ be a timeline of machines. Suppose this timeline is $n$-cofinal in $\mathrm{Real}(P)$, meaning that $$\forall R \in \mathrm{Real}(P)\; \exists i \in I \quad\text{such that}\quad Q_n(M_i) \simeq Q_n(R).$$ ### Theorem 6.1 (Eventual realization up to semantic type). If $\mathrm{Real}(P) \neq \varnothing$ and the machine timeline is $n$-cofinal in $\mathrm{Real}(P)$, then there exists $i \in I$ such that $$Q_n(M_i) \simeq [P]_n.$$ Proof. Choose any $$R \in \mathrm{Real}(P),$$ which exists by assumption. Since the timeline is $n$-cofinal, there is an $i \in I$ satisfying $$Q_n(M_i) \simeq Q_n(R).$$ Since $R$ realizes $P$, $$Q_n(R) \simeq [P]_n.$$ Therefore $$Q_n(M_i) \simeq [P]_n.$$ Hence stage $i$ realizes the specification up to the chosen homotopy $n$-type. ## 7. Recursive self-improvement Let $$\mathcal{O}_n := \tau_{\leq n}\mathcal{O}$$ be the $n$-truncated $\infty$-type of agent operations. Suppose self-improvement induces an internal endomorphism $$F \colon \mathcal{O}_n \to \mathcal{O}_n.$$ For an initial semantic operation $$o_0 \in \mathcal{O}_n,$$ define recursively $$o_{k+1} := F(o_k).$$ Then $$o_k = F^k(o_0).$$ A family of machines $(M_k)_{k \geq 0}$ realizes this recursive process up to semantic level $n$ precisely when $$Q_n(M_k) \simeq o_k$$ for all $k$. There is no requirement that $$M_{k+1} \simeq M_k.$$ Indeed, if the fibers of $Q_n$ are nontrivial, there may exist many inequivalent realizers satisfying $$Q_n(M_k) \simeq o_k.$$ Thus recursive self-improvement is naturally an operation on semantic classes: $$\mathcal{O}_n \xrightarrow{\ F\ } \mathcal{O}_n,$$ rather than necessarily an endomorphism of a uniquely determined machine presentation. ## 8. Main conclusion The preceding results establish the following separation: $$\boxed{\begin{array}{c} \text{finite presentation} \\[2mm] \Downarrow \\[2mm] \text{semantic operation class }[P]_n \\[2mm] \Downarrow \\[2mm] \text{possibly many inequivalent realizers }M \end{array}}$$ More precisely, $$M \longmapsto Q_n(M)$$ is a semantic localization. If it is non-conservative on the relevant realization category, then $$Q_n(M) \simeq Q_n(N) \quad\not\Rightarrow\quad M \simeq N.$$ Hence the appropriate uniqueness statement is the operation class is unique up to $n$-equivalence, whereas its machine realization need not be unique. The non-uniqueness is therefore not an artifact of comparing different syntactic presentations. It is a structural consequence of passing from realizations to a truncated semantic localization. # Identity is a space of paths Editorial primer ## Equality with structure An inhabitant $p : x =_A y$ witnesses an identification between two terms. Identity elimination supplies composition and inverses up to higher identifications; these laws need not hold judgmentally. The resulting hierarchy motivates a groupoid interpretation of types: objects are terms, morphisms are identifications, and higher morphisms witness coherence. ## The universe matters Univalence identifies equivalences with paths in a universe, through the statement $(A \simeq B) \simeq (A =_{\mathcal{U}} B)$. It does not make every judgmental equality decidable or erase the distinction between syntax and semantics. For a complete treatment, consult [The HoTT Book](https://homotopytypetheory.org/book/), especially its chapters on identity types and univalence. ```text An implementation stores LaTeX literally: \mathcal{U}, \simeq, \infty. Its form records the observations and transitions available from each state. A stream coalgebra, for example, has $F(X) = A \times X$. For deterministic labeled transition systems, a suitable functor makes the transition structure explicit. Bisimulation relates states whose observations match and whose successor states remain related. ## A semantic qualification The relationship between bisimulation and equality in a final coalgebra depends on the functor and the existence of that final coalgebra. These hypotheses are part of the theorem, not incidental implementation details. We invite manuscripts that state these assumptions and test them against concrete concurrent or stateful systems. The design of interval operations and Kan composition varies among systems. Computational accounts of univalence seek rules whose behavior supports normalization or canonicity in the particular calculus. An implementation claim should identify the calculus and the exact metatheorem it relies on. ## What to submit An executable account should include a versioned implementation, the primitive composition operations it uses, and a minimal example illustrating transport along a nontrivial path. Our scope includes higher inductive types, constructive Kan operations, and categorical models of these rules. This original editorial primer is not a peer-reviewed manuscript.
